Pre-Admission Teaching and Screening (PATS)

Print, complete and bring with you: PATS Form

At MercyOne, providing quality care and the highest level of patient safety is a top priority. Pre-Admission Teaching and Screening (PATS) nurses are highly trained and educated in preparing you for your upcoming surgery or procedure. The PATS nurses communicate frequently with your physician and coordinate care between your surgeon, cardiologist and anesthesia provider to ensure optimal care and the safest outcomes. Our MercyOne Clinton Surgery scheduler will contact you to remind you of your PATS appointment.

During a PATS visit, we aim to:

  • Educate patients and families on upcoming procedures and surgeries
  • Answer your questions to reduce stress and anxiety for you and your family
  • Ensure a smooth, organized day of surgery
  • Update your health history, including prior surgeries and medications
  • Allow time to clarify/answer any questions you may have about your surgery

PATS visits take from 30-60 minutes.

This visit may include blood work, X-rays or an EKG depending on what your doctor has ordered.

It is very important for you to bring a list of your medications or the actual pill bottle to your PATS appointment so we can confirm your medications and review which medications your anesthesia provider wants you to take or stop.

The Night Before Your Surgery

  1. Please use pre-op wipe down cloths if you were given those at your PATS visit.
  2. Do not eat or drink ANYTHING after midnight. If your surgery is in the afternoon, follow your nurse's instruction on when to stop eating/drinking.
  3. No alcohol for 24 hours before surgery.
