Mercy Hospice Quilt “Heartstrings” Unveiled

Clinton, IA -- In an unveiling ceremony held recently at Mercy Medical Center, Sue Tappe presented the fifth quilt made to honor and remember individuals who have passed away and whose families had been touched in some way by the services provided by Mercy Hospice.  Nearly 70 family members, friends and staff members were in attendance at the ceremony when the quilt was presented.

This year’s quilt, entitled “Heartstrings” took Tappe more than 196 hours to make.  Noting how the appliquéd hearts are connected in all different colors, Tappe points out how similar this is to our lives.  “We are all different and diversified, varied in our work, play and interests” said Tappe, “but we connect with one another.”

Tappe began making the quilts after her husband Pat passed away in 2002.  Tappe’s sister has been making hospice quilts for years in Wisconsin with a hospital there.

"When Pat passed away, I approached the hospital here with the idea. This was not for any recognition. This was about comfort for families,” said Sue.  “When I see the emotion people have from seeing the quilt, it was all worth it.”

The public may view the quilt, which is displayed in the visitors’ hallway at Mercy Medical Center - North Campus.  Alongside the quilt are Tappe’s notes, which further tell the story of how the design, fabrics, and quilting relate to the loved ones whose names are on the quilt.
