Day of Surgery (Same Day Surgery)

The Morning of Your Surgery

  1. DO NOT chew gum, suck on hard candy, smoke or place chew in your mouth.
  2. Take any medications you were instructed to take with the least amount of water possible.
  3. Arrive at the hospital.

Upon Arrival to the Hospital

Admitting:

  1. Check in at Admitting, which is to your left when you walk in the main entrance.
    1. MercyOne Clinton volunteers will escort you to the Same Day Surgery (SDS) department.
    2. All surgical patients start in SDS (excluding C-section patients) even if you will be staying overnight.

Same Day Surgery:

  1. Once you arrive in SDS, your nurse will introduce herself and give you directions.
  2. If you will be having an incision, you will be given some wipes to clean with that kill bacteria off of the surface of your skin and decrease the chance of infection.
  3. Your nurse will review all information that the PATS nurse took from you and complete your assessments. This includes what medications you took that morning. This is a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
  4. If you are of child-bearing age and still having a period, you may be required to have a pregnancy test.
  5. An IV will be started if ordered by your doctor. SDS nurses are highly skilled at starting IVs.
  6. You will be seen by an anesthesia provider prior to your surgery.
    • Please let your anesthesia provider know if you or any family members have a problem with anesthesia or allergies.
  7. Your risk of nausea and vomiting will be assessed. We will collaborate with your anesthesia provider to decrease your chances of getting sick after surgery.
  8. You will be interviewed by a nurse from the Operating Room; they will once again review your information.
  9. Your doctor may mark the site with his initials prior to you going to surgery.
  10. If you have written down questions for your doctor, this is a good time to ask. Your family is also welcome to ask questions.
  11. We strongly encourage you or your family to mention any concerns or worries you may have about the surgery.

For your safety, you MUST have someone who can take you home and care for you after your surgery. You CANNOT take a cab or ride the bus by yourself.
