Donnelly Receives Distinguished Physician Award
Start Date

Physician Robert Donnelly, MD, was recently awarded the Distinguished Physician Award, an annual recognition presented by Mercy Medical Center. The award is presented to a physician who demonstrates several qualities which include enriching patients, colleagues and the community through dedicated medical practice; compassion and sensitivity; mentoring peers and others; promoting the betterment of public health; embodying values of the medical profession through leadership, service, excellence, and integrity; and working well with and respecting members of the healthcare team.

The Distinguished Physician Award was presented to Donnelly, a board certified physician in Obstetrics/Gynecology, during a recognition event during the annual Nurses Day celebration in May. Donnelly was nominated for his role as physician champion for the Perinatal Patient Safety project, a multi-faceted project which recently was awarded statewide recognition through the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative. Donnelly was recognized for exemplary leadership in the OB unit at Mercy.

His nominators wrote “(Donnelly) is committed to practicing the current professional standards in Obstetrics, is open-minded and willing to examine research and data for the safest patient care. He is a truly respected colleague among the nurses in OB.”

In addition, nominations also stated, “Dr. Donnelly attends the OB/GN meetings and meetings with the University of Iowa to help identify improvement initiatives. He cares about the practice and Mercy. He is consistent and professional with patients, families and nursing professionals.”

The Distinguished Physician Award nominees are voted on by members of Mercy’s Nursing profession.

“As nurses, we work very closely with physicians not only in the care of patients, but also as we continually work to provide the highest quality of care,” said Amy Berentes, VP of Patient Care Services. “Dr. Donnelly was recognized for his commitment and dedication to his support of the Perinatal Patient Safety Project, an extensive initiative which began in 2007.”

Donnelly is a physician member of Medical Associates. He received his medical degree from University of Iowa in 1982 and throughout his career, has delivered more than 4500 babies.
